It is time to start training again!

The trainer is calling you back from summer vacation!

My message today is simple and sweet.  I want you to think about how you are going to take better care of yourself this fall. Specifically, what classes will you join?

The clients who make the most progress and achieve their goals, commit to a class or personal training for a specific period of time.  I want you to look around in your area and find some classes or a trainer that will help you to take care of the most important person in your life; you!

Take up something new. Try a dance class or a yoga class. No matter what you decide, I know that simply telling yourself that you will walk more, is not enough.  Life will get in the way, so before we all get very busy, sign yourself up for an activity.  Put yourself on the "to-do list."

On my website: betholdfield.ca, you will find information on some of the classes I am teaching this fall. If you want more info just contact me via the contact form on the site.

I have been advertising to many of my clients about fall classes for a few weeks now.  I can sense that there is a reluctance to admit that summer is coming to an end.  I can appreciate that however before you know it September will be upon us and I do not want you to miss out on committing to caring for yourself this fall.

One of my long time personal training clients came to my home studio for a 6 am workout today.  It is hard to make this first jump but now we have a plan for the next three weeks and I know that in that time she will be feeling fine and will be ready to take on more.

Have a great day everyone.

Get moving!

Spiders anyone?

My daughter noticed this spider on our porch this week.  Living in the country for over 20 years you would think I would be accustomed to critters like this but I was completely freaked out by this guy.

My husband was amazed and insisted that I take pictures.  I was too afraid to get that close so he took several shots with my phone.  I was about to delete them this morning and I thought I would share his image with all of you who love spiders!

I posted his photo on Facebook and two of my friends correctly identified him as a zipper spider or a yellow garden spider.  Apparently he is not dangerous though I am constantly looking over my shoulder when I am on the porch now.

My husband relocated him over the stream and into the woods, faraway from our house.  He then did an inspection around the house and found a female.  She can have up to 1400 babies!  So I am happy to report that he relocated her as well.

Their webs are spun like in a zipper pattern apparently though I am no expert and not very interested in learning anymore than what I know already.  My flesh is crawling just from writing about it at the moment so I am done with this topic.

Except for one fact that my friend Krysta pointed out.  If you look closely there is a heart in the web.  I have been seeing lots of heart images lately in nature.  Not sure that this spider is sharing any love with me but it is cute all the same...I think..:)

Have a great day everyone...spider free I hope.

Thank you!

Just a quick note today to thank everyone who sent loving vibes my way concerning my daughter's health.

Thanks to antibiotics, she is finally recovering.  Now she has to make up for not eating for a week!  Makes me wonder how awful it must be to live in a country where one does not have easy access to medicine and medical care.

We are so thankful!

I have sent a picture of her smiling and looking a bit better to members of our family who have been keeping up with me on Facebook about her condition but she will not let me post it on social media!  Something about no makeup and her hair.. :)

To me she looks so beautiful but I shall respect the youngster.

Have a great day and I see some of you soon in class.  It will be so nice to be back to teaching after spending the last 5 days as a nurse!  God Bless all nurses and Dr's.  After spending a teeny, tiny bit of time in your world, I prefer my job.

Sincerely,
Beth

A Personal Reflection

Since Thursday night of last week, I have been taking care of my twenty year old daughter who is terribly ill with what first appeared to be the flu virus but then became a bladder infection.

I am out of practice with my Mom nursing duties so I am completely exhausted from worry and service... so my message today is very simple.

Do not take your health or the health of your loved ones for granted.

We have taken her to the hospital twice because her fever would not stay down nor would her food.  I am so grateful for all of the nurses and doctors out there who dedicate their lives to caring for us all when we are sick.  There is nothing like visiting the hallways of hospitals to make you realize how grateful we should be for every single day of good health.

Hug your loved ones today. Make smart, healthy choices....

I hope to get some sleep today.

Wishing you all a wonderful day.

Why Yoga?

This week I came across three people in my life who expressed their dislike for yoga. In two of the cases the individuals said that they hate moving so slowly.  In the third case, the person said that it makes her nauseous.

I have one client who did not want to be in my yoga class because she felt it was some sort of cult and that it would go against her religion.

There are a number of reasons why people dislike yoga. Perhaps you have a few reasons yourself.

One thing that yoga does is it forces us to slow down and face our limitations both emotional and physical. Many people hate being alone with their thoughts. In my classes, we hold the poses/stretches for 5 deep breaths usually. The challenge is learning to relax into the pose and accept what it is teaching you about your body and mind.  This can be hard for people to face.  If you are one of those people, I suggest that you still do the yoga and eventually the "feeling" components of the class will come into focus for you.  Until then, look at it as a just a great way to become strong and flexible. Ignore the 'mumbo jumbo' of the yogi at the front of the class, if what he or she is saying sounds hokey to you.

My first experience with yoga was "Hot Yoga."  I took a friend of mine. It was awful.  The room is very hot and we were doing extremely challenging poses in that heat for 90 minutes.  My friend threw up and passed out!  I hated the experience, especially since I had told the teacher that it was my first class and after telling me to go at my own pace, he chastised me anytime I came out of the pose to take a break!

I am happy to say that I did go to another yoga class and it was there that I found peace and relaxation.

My message today is there are many different styles of yoga and many interesting classes, so if you have had a bad experience in one, try another.

I am not a perfect yogi by any stretch of the imagination but I do my best to show people the benefits of regular yoga practice.

In my fitness classes I have been incorporating yoga postures for years during the stretching component but not using yoga terms.  Instead I have taught my clients that the low lunge picture above, also know as prayer twist, is both a stretch and a challenge at the same time.  So for those athletes who do not want to be caught doing yoga, I would speak about the balance challenge and for those wanting the stretch, I would focus on teaching them how the pose is helping to keep them flexible.

The key is simply to get moving.  Once people start to feel their bodies in ways that are unknown to them, the benefits start to unfold.  Now my clients actually ask me for more "yoga stretching ."

Yesterday, after I had taught fitness for a few hours my body was not happy.  My right hip was in pain and it was radiating to my lower back.  I immediately went into my stretches from my physiotherapist, which also happen to be common yoga postures but because I was rushed, I was not getting any relief.  The relief came later after teaching my last class of the day, Gentle Yoga Stretch on the chair.

I felt so wonderful after the class.  My pain was gone completely and I thought to myself, I wish I could convince everyone I know to give yoga a try.

Find a friend and a go to a new yoga class this weekend.  You will laugh together and maybe in the process you will reap some benefits for your body and mind.

Have a great weekend everyone,
Beth

"Remember why you started."

Last month I watched Joss Stone, an English soul singer and songwriter, being interviewed on a Canadian entertainment show. The interviewer asked her how she handles criticism.  She went on to talk about how hard it can be to be judged but that she believes the key is to "remember why you started."

To me this quote has great meaning.  It is so easy to be dragged down by criticism in the fitness industry as we are constantly having to measure ourselves up against the latest, coolest trend. Some of the things I see make me question what my place will be in the future when I have no interest in hanging from ropes to do yoga or boot camp workouts.

If I remember why I started, it is because I love teaching.  I love helping people be the best that they can be. I do not consider myself to be the guru of fitness information. I do not pretend to have all of the answers and when I am with other fitness professionals who do act like they know it all, I start to wonder if I should be teaching. It is very easy to get sucked down the rabbit hole of the latest exercise craze.

What I do know is I want my students to come to my classes feeling like they will be safe and cared for properly. I want them to know that I consider myself to be a partner in their efforts to get healthier.  Together with their doctor's care and perhaps a physiotherapists advice, I hope to help my students enjoy a pain free experience that makes them fall in love with exercise.

I believe in doing the basics better.  I believe in working out in a balanced fashion. I try very hard to not to swing to the extremes in anything I do, as in my opinion that is where injuries occur.

I remember that as a little girl, my favorite thing to do was pretend I was the teacher!  I love sharing my passion for dance and fitness with my students.

This is why I started!  To spread the passion.

Have a fabulous day everyone.
