My family of Yoga Warriors!

We spent the weekend up at my sister's cottage, just over 2 hours from our home.  Yesterday morning, 9 members of my family joined me for a morning meditation lead by my nephew Rob and a yoga stretch class. What you cannot see is that we are overlooking a magnificent river!  One or two hummingbirds came to check us out while we were doing our poses though I think my students were very focused and may have missed that little detail. One of the family dogs took turns laying on our matts with us under the sun.  After getting stepped on once or twice, he gave up.

The tranquillity of this space is unbelievable. All you can hear are the birds and crickets and the wind in the trees.

Some of the younger members of the family enjoyed the attention of the camera man, my husband.  No doubt he was egging them on to develop their own unique versions of spinal twist.

After class, a well deserved dip in the river!

What a great weekend.

Now I must focus on getting my classes ready for fall.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Many of you know that I am in a state of tidying up my house after reading "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo.

Closet by closet and box by box, I am weeding out things I no longer use or need and in the process unearthing treasures like this photo.

Peter loved to use his tripod when we first met and take pictures everywhere.  This is on our honeymoon, the day after our wedding.  We used a friends cottage on Lake Champlain. No real plumbing. Just an insulated box basically, on a beautiful lake.  Peace and quiet. No big expensive holiday for us.  In fact, I think we ate Kraft dinner!

All to say that this photo was dumped into a box.  I had completely forgotten about it so I am so grateful that it is now unpacked and sitting in a proper place where it can be enjoyed.

My message today is to go through one box of things that you are avoiding.  Shed some stuff and uncover what you really love.  One box at a time, I am finding myself.  It is such a great feeling.

Have a great day everyone..and stop laughing at all of the hair going on in that picture. I am sure you have some 80's photos to share!!!

Sincerely,
Beth

My Sympathies

Yesterday I learned of the tragic passing of a family friend. She died from lymphoma at the age of 29.

Many years ago I was the Director of Education at Wyman Memorial United Church in Hudson, Quebec and this young lady was in my graduating class.  At that time I had designed a magazine with the kids so that they could express themselves.  My mission today is to find that edition and publish the art work that she did for the cover.

No official blog today. Lots of introspection and reflection at this very sad time.

Hug your friends and family today for life can be so short.

My Experience with a Tarot Card Reader

Yesterday, I met a lady in the St. Lazare area who is well known for reading tarot cards and tea leaves.  I have heard such great things about this person that I decided it was something that I would like to experience.

The reaction I have received from people about this has been interesting.  Some people were opposed and even afraid, while others have confessed their curiosity.

For the record, I loved every minute of it.  I have always loved submerging myself into people's beliefs in an attempt to better understand myself and others. I always take and leave what I like and dislike about the experiences that I have and come away with knowledge. Knowledge is power. We must make our own judgements about these things and not rely on others to tell us to stay away.

I went in with a completely open mind and so much of what she said was unbelievable accurate that I have no desire to try to deny her credibility. She told me things both good and bad that are going to come up in my life.  She told me that my parents are with me, protecting me and that they were there at that moment. I know and believe this to be true so that did not surprise me or frighten me in the least.

Suffice it to say that I do believe all of us have the ability to hone our intuitive skills, just as we can all learn how to cook or build things.  Getting in touch with the spiritual realm is within our grasp but we often leave it to priests and ministers etc.

When we meet someone for the first time we often get a vibe about that person. For me it is clear whether I will get along with the individual right away or not and I only get into trouble when I ignore my intuition. This is true for all areas of my life.

When your heart speaks to you, listen.

If you are at all interested in this kind of experience, give it a try. It did not cost a fortune and it was interesting and fun!

Try something new today!

Life Changing Book

When I come across a book that will help my students achieve better balance in their lives, I need to talk about it. Before you think that this is just going to be a blog about putting your drawers in order, stay with me as the process is much deeper than that and in the end, you come away with a clearer understanding of who you are, what you like and where you are going.

This book, "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying up," by Marie Kondo has really changed my life. No joke.

Last Saturday I expressed to my class that I was heading home to clean out and organize my closets.  Two of  the students told me that I should read this book. Trusting them as I do, I bought it on my way home. It was the best $15 I have ever spent.  I tried to take it out of the library but it is so popular I could not get it for 8 weeks!

Why has this book changed my life?  The answer is so simple, it is kind of sad.

I literally spend so much time looking for clothes or papers etc, that it causes me stress. I end up getting frustrated and leaving my space in a bigger mess than when I found it. I procrastinate in dealing with my personal mess, even though I am organized at work, so my troubles grow and then I end up feeling overwhelmed.  When our home is in chaos, these little feelings gnaw away at us and end up making us unhealthy as a result.

What Marie taught me to do was to tidy up once!  Once and then never tidy again.

Once you actually put what you wear and what you use and what you really value in a place, it stays there. Every single thing you own has a place. So instead of having your clothes in multiple places, you have them all in one space and her system gets you organized that you can literally see everything you own in one glance. You therefore waste no time and can focus on the things you love the most. Think about the amount of places that you are storing similar items all over your house. It really is eye opening.

The basic premise is that we collect, inherit and carry stuff that does not bring us joy.  So for many of us, me included, our houses are filled with things that we do not wear and cannot see because we simply have too much of everything. I was basically just moving things around, not really throwing anything out because someone may need it..or it is too good to toss away.

First, you must gather all of the clothes that you own, from all parts of the house ( purses, shoes too) and dump them on the floor, the mound is massive and for me eye opening! I laughed throughout the process at how ridiculous it was that I had so much.

Then handle each item and ask yourself it this brings you joy. In the end, this question teaches you what you actually want to own and how you want to live your life.  I was hanging onto things that did not fit me. Pants that I just needed to get hemmed that had sat in my closet with the tags on for 5 years. There was so much that I was not wearing that I had no attachment to, that I ended up with 4, 85 litre garbage bags of stuff to donate, an entire bag of shoes and then another bag of belts and scarves and costume jewelry.
I was able to give away 30 hangers to a friend who was moving into a new home. The process of dumping everything I own onto the floor was enlightening. I found things that I really love, that I had lost and tried to replace by buying more stuff. The experience is amazing!

This is the "before" picture of half of my closet.
Now I can see everything.

I can see every single item at a quick glance!  Takes no time at all to select and get dressed. No clothes left on the floor. Everything has a place.

I have so much more space in my closet because I got rid of things I did not love and changed how to fold them, which she teaches you as well. Some of us have never learned.

If you struggle like I do with staying organized, go and buy this book. It is worth every penny!

Have a great day.
